Superior lighting for outside. Still the highest Lm/W over any lamp type. Last 12,000-18,000 hours. I have used the 18W SOX and 35W SOX for decades, flawless. the original PHILIPS fixtures are about 28 years old and still going fine, change the lamps about every 5 years of every night usage. 1 35W and 3 18W fixtures. Nice soft YELLOW glow, no glare, just right night lighting the dogs see fine, I ee them. No annoying glare for any neighbors.

This was the third type of lamp I had used on my backyard (about a 30 by 50 foot space.) I didn't want to pay for a 1000w flood light and watch my electric bill go through the roof, so I tried CFLs which were next to useless. At low temps they are dim and I went through them too quickly. A 70-watt HPS was pretty nice, but when I installed this, on a whim, I was blown away. My wife likes to say you can see our backyard from space now.
The light output from a 55w bulb is staggering. Every part of the yard is lit up well enough to distinguish even the smallest textures. Yes, it is pure yellow, so you won't be painting any masterpieces out in it, but for the money, it's got to be the best security/street lighting around. The bulb works well at low temps (12 degrees) as it does at high temps. The yellow color isn't bad either. It has a peaceful sort of ambiance in comparison to a harsher white MH or MV light.
